Mill Valley Arts Commission Launches Virtual Artwalk

4/9/2020

Picture
The Mill Valley Arts Commission's First Tuesday Artwalk, a monthly celebration of local art throughout downtown and at venues all over town, is a great way for art lovers to feed their soul by checking out some incredible art.

But it has always been a very communal, in-person activity, with spaces like the O’Hanlon Center for the Arts, the Mill Valley Public Library, Depot Bookstore & Café, City Hall, Famous4, Mill Valley Community Center, Seager Gray Gallery, Throckmorton Theatre and much more opening their doors to art aficionados.

But as it has with seemingly every aspect of human life in 2020, COVID-19 has changed all that, and the Arts Commission has reacted accordingly, transforming the monthly Artwalk into a virtual affair.

"We want to see your art, what you perceive as art, or just some cool or interesting things around town," the commission announced this week. "Post your art / photos on Instagram and tag us @mvartscommission & use the hashtag #MillValleyArtWalk. Get those creative juices flowing and start posting!"

The Commission will choose its weekly top picks to feature on its website and social media channels

Neighbors Appeal City Decision to Allow New Apizza Restaurant Owner to Remove Trees at Ex-Gira Polli Site

4/6/2020

Hearing is set for May 4.
Picture
There hasn’t been a more visibly vacant commercial space in Mill Valley over the past several years – save for the blank canvas that is the mother of all retaining walls at 500 Miller Ave. – than the former Gira Polli space at 590 East Blithedale and Camino Alto.

Bay Area food industry vets Pascal Rigo and Nicolas Bernadi have been hoping to change that, leasing the building with the hopes of making it one of the locations for La Boulangerie, the post-Starbucks, slightly renamed rebirth of their popular La Boulange cafes and eateries. They shifted gears earlier this year and decided to make the space home to Apizza, their simple, affordable pizza shop that already has a successful location on Fillmore Street in San Francisco.

Given the shelter in place order in effect through May 3 to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, the Apizza renovation is on indefinite hiatus, as is all construction in Mill Valley. And even when that prohibition on non-essential construction is over, they face extremely dire economic circumstance wrought by the outbreak.

But before they have a chance to overcome those significant hurdles, they're facing a neighbor protest to the Mill Valley Planning Commission's approval of Apizza's request to remove a few trees in front of the building at the corner of East Blithedale and Camino Alto. Susan Kirsch, representing the Freeman Park Neighborhood Association, filed an appeal to the Planning Commission’s approval of the tree permit earlier this month.

The City Council was set to hear the appeal on April 20, but Kirsch asked to postpone the hearing because a virtual public hearing, as required under the shelter in place order, would not allow their supporters to provide input in a “normal” manner. City officials agreed to postpone the hearing to May 4, which is within the 45-day timeframe required for appeal hearings. The format of the hearing will depend upon the status of the Shelter in Place Order that ends for the time being on May 3, according to Newman.

The five blackwood acacia and eucalyptus trees were determined by an arborist to be non-heritage trees, according to Lisa Newman, a senior planner with the city. The commission backed the request to remove five 50-foot trees and replace them with red maples – up to 11 trees, each with a 48-inch box.

The trees are also considered a fire threat, have shallow root systems that could damage infrastructure and pose a danger to motorists when the branches are not maintained, according to a report by Bartlett Tree Experts.

The tree removal is part of Bay Area food industry vets Pascal Rigo and Nicolas Bernadi's plans to "rejuvenate that corner, bring it back alive, fix the building and the site, which is in terrible repair and give something to the community,” Mill Valley architect Christopher Raker told the Marin IJ.

MV's Green Jeans Garden Supply Among Those Seeing a Surge in Sales For 'Victory Gardens' Amidst COVID-19

4/5/2020

Picture
Americans are turning to all sorts of new or reinvigorated pursuits amidst the shelter in place order due to the COVID-19 outbreak, including binge-watching, bread-baking, puzzle-mastering – and even victory gardens.

The latter of those has been a boon for Mill Valley garden supply shops like
Green Jeans Garden Supply In Strawberry, according to KTVU.

”We have had a large increase of customers buying vegetable starts, fruit trees, vegetable seed,” co-owner Kevin Sadlier told KTVU. He has been busy with both old and new customers. I think people are hunkering down and are beginning to wonder about the food supply coupled with the fact they are hunkered down. And they want to have something to do at home. Gardening is a perfect activity for the family.”

Victory gardens came about during World War I and again during World War II. The government encouraged the public to grow food at home to feed their families.

As Easter Sunday Approaches, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church Ramps Up Live Streamed Services Masses

4/5/2020

Picture
Churches and religious organizations of every stripe have been forced in recent weeks to shift their focus to virtual services amidst the COVID-19 outbreak, and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, which celebrated its church building's 50th anniversary in 2018, has been among those leading the charge.

Father Patrick Michaels, the church's pastor, has been saying a daily mass streamed live online for the Mt. Carmel parishioners, and is ramping up with an array of services as Easter Sunday approaches on April 12.

That includes a Palm Sunday Mass at 10:15 am on April 5 via Livestream on Facebook Live. You can sing the songs and join in the Passion Narrative by downloading our worship guide. The first two pages contain the hymns and Mass parts, followed by the Narrative.

Here is the Holy Week schedule, all of which will be livestreamed.
  • MASS OF THE LORD'S SUPPER: Thursday, 7:30 p.m.
  • LITURGY OF GOOD FRIDAY: Friday, 1:30 - 3 p.m. (Note that according to the Church's ancient tradition, Mass is not celebrated on this day. The celebration includes the Liturgy of the Word, Adoration of the Cross and, in this case, Spiritual Communion.)
  • EASTER VIGIL: Saturday, 8:30 p.m.  At this special Holy Saturday Vigil Mass, we celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord, beginning in darkness and moving in and towards His light. This is the major celebration of the Church's year.
  • EASTER SUNDAY: April 12, 10:15 a.m.
  • Note that Daily Mass will be livestreamed at 7:45 a.m. this week Monday through Wednesday. There will be no 7:45 a.m. Mass Thursday through Saturday due to the Triduum schedule. Daily 7:45 a.m. Mass will resume Easter Monday, April 13.

Appointments for both the Sacrament of the Sick (especially Last Rites, Communion for the last time) and Reconciliation may be made by contacting Father Pat at 415-388-4190. He can come to your home for Sacrament of the Sick, and you can come to the church for Reconciliation in the sacristy, where 6-feet distance can be respected.

"In this time of tribulation, our spiritual connections are of the utmost importance to our well-being," Father Pat says. "It is to our hearts that we need to go so that Jesus may die and rise there. Even as we celebrate Holy Week and the Sacred Triduum remotely, we are not re-enacting historical events. We are observing them unfold anew in our lives, and celebrating our good fortune to be those observers and participants. We are the Body of Christ. We celebrate in Reconciliation and Eucharist a union that only Christ's death and resurrection can achieve. Christ's action takes place in us as we grow in our belief in the power of God's love to make it so. Join our online community for all these livestreamed celebrations."

Organizers of the 39th Annual Mill Valley Wine, Beer and Gourmet Food Tasting, one of Mill Valley's iconic events and a benefit for Kiddo!, the Mill Valley Schools Community Foundation and the Mill Valley Chamber, have postponed the event from its scheduled date of June 7 because of the uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak and the resulting shelter in place order, which extends at least through May 3.

This landmark event, sponsored by Mill Valley Market since 1981, features wine from more than 65 premium wineries, fine craft beers from 15 breweries and food from nearly 30 food purveyors and 10 local restaurants and chefs.

It is postponed to September 2020 and may be reconfigured to "provide an opportunity for the community to gather, fingers crossed, to celebrate Mill Valley's bounty of great food, drink and boundless energy and creativity," says Mill Valley Chamber Co-Director Paula Reynolds. "While we're disappointed to put this incredible event on hold for now, we can't wait to all get together again and celebrate the amazing place we get to call home."

Those of you who have already purchased tickets to the event may request a refund here or choose to turn it into a donation.

George Lawson Gallery Lets You View Johanna Baruch's 'Himma: Selections from the Cosmos' Series From Home

George Lawson Gallery, one of a pair of acclaimed galleries that moved from San Francisco to Mill Valley in 2019, was set to debut its latest exhibit last month – Johanna Baruch's—Himma: Selections from the Cosmos Series, a selection of gorgeous paintings that study the heavens – only to have the shelter in place order to combat the COVID-19 outbreak shut down art galleries.

But with the order being extended until at least May 3, Lawson is making certain that as many people as possible can view Baruch's work. He's created a slideshow of the pieces on his website, which you can view here or by clicking the image above.

"If you happen to have snuck out for a breath of air, you can catch it through our window," Lawson says. "In the meanwhile, here’s a scrolling presentation of the work."

Tam High Student Launches 'Feed the Frontlines Marin' to Deliver Meals to Workers, Support Local Restaurants

Over the past few weeks, as the shelter in place order spurred on by the COVID-19 outbreak turned into a open-ended necessity, Tam High senior Kylie Frame has watched many of the quintessential milestones of her senior year evaporate.

Her final lacrosse season: canceled.

Hanging out with close friends as they get ready for their next life chapter: Digitally, sure.

College visits: not happening.

Prom: Nope.

Graduation: Same.

But to the good fortune of the Marin community of first responders, healthcare workers, grocery clerks and those that are on the frontlines of the COVID-19 response in Marin, Frame is not the shrinking violet type.

Over the past week, Frame has launched Feed the Frontlines Marin, a two-pronged effort to deliver meals to those on the frontlines of the COVID-19 response and raise money to support the costs associated with it. To date the campaign has raised more than $14,000 towards it’s $20,000 goal to buy meals from local restaurants and deliver them to frontline workers, and has garnered meal support from Ged Robertson’s Shoreline Coffee Shop and Watershed as well as Karen Olsen’s Juice Girl for juices and smoothies. The move is similar to the efforts of Chelsea Hutchison’s BOL “pay it forward” meal program.

Frame made her first deliveries this week, starting with 30 breakfasts from Shoreline and fresh-pressed juices from Juice Girl to Marin General, with another 40 dinners to follow.

Frame was inspired by family friends in New York City who own Tarallucci e Vino and other restaurants in the city and launched Feed The Frontlines NYC as a way to feed first responders but also to support local restaurants trying to sustain themselves on takeout/delivery service only to comply with the shelter in place order. That effort has raised more than $100,000, providing thousands of meals and saving a number of jobs.

As has been the case with so many of the philanthropic efforts amidst COVID-19 over the past several weeks, the effort to launch Feed the Frontlines Marin was all hands on deck. Frame set it all in motion, including the outreach to the various frontline destinations like Marin General and UCSF, while Quincy Robertson, just home from college, coordinated the logistics of the meals from his father’s restaurants.

Local designer James van Kriedt of Bootjack Creative whipped up some branding for the campaign (at left), and off they went.

Beyond supporting local restaurants and frontline workers, Ged Robertson noted that restaurants like Shoreline and Watershed source their ingredients from local farms, including Green Gulch bread, Star Route lettuce, Stemple Creek beef, eggs from Wooly Egg Ranch so the money spent at local restaurants goes into our local food systems.

“I just saw this as an opportunity to do something proactive when it seems like all we can do is sit inside,” Frame says. “The goal is to deliver as many meals as possible. It’s a welcome distraction and a way to make a difference. I feel lucky to be able to do it.”
