From banks and retailers to restaurants and art galleries, dozens of local businesses and organizations have signed an anti-litter Merchant Pledge from Clean Mill Valley, a local organization focused on “creating public awareness about litter and its impact on our community and the environment.”

The campaign, which seeks to help rid litter from the streets and waterways within the greater Mill Valley area, is being spearheaded by a group of sixth grade environmental studies students at the Greenwood School. Led by Greenwood teacher Julie Hanft, the students are approaching Mill Valley business owners to garner their signature on a Merchant Pledge to help make Mill Valley's environments litter free.

The students, many of whom have also been at the forefront of a collaboration with Greenwood Building Supply to clean up the marsh near the hardware retailer have already gotten nearly 40 business owners to sign the pledge.

The Pledge calls for merchants to take simple steps such as assigning employees to pick up litter around their business and properly dispose of and sort the litter; to contract with Mill Valley Refuse to provide garbage service for the business, per the City of Mill Valley’s Municipal Code; and to educate employees about the proper disposal and sorting of garbage.

Merchants who participate in the program receive a Clean Mill Valley window sticker as well as recognition on both the Clean Mill Valley and Mill Valley Chamber websites.

“This is a fantastic program and the logical next step for all of Clean Mill Valley and the Greenwood students’ dedicated efforts over the past year to rid our streets, sidewalks and waterways of litter,” said Chamber Co-Director Paula Reynolds. “We wholeheartedly support this campaign and urge our Members to participate in it.”

A designated representative of the business will sign the Clean Mill Valley Merchant Pledge and students will periodically visit afterwards to ensure that pledges are being kept. For additional information about the program, contact Joan Murray at joan@cleanmv.org.
