The prowess of Martin Ray Winery dates back more than 80 years, when Ray, who learned to make wine from Paul Masson, and then bought Masson’s vineyard in 1936, and produced varietals until the 1970s. But the staying power of the acclaimed brand traces back to winemaker Courtney Benham's chance discovery of 1,500 cases of Martin Ray wines in a San Jose storage space, which propelled him to acquire the rights to the iconic label, named for its founder, who passed away in 1976, from his family.
On Wednesday, Feb. 26, Mill Valley's Bungalow 44 restaurant is set to celebrate that lineage with a special evening featuring Benham and Bungalow chef Gabe Charpentier collaborating on a five-course dinner with wine pairings that span Martin Ray Winery's wine.
