Bank of Marin this week unveiled the winners of its 25th Annual Spirit of Marin Awards, recognizing a group of businesses and citizens that that has exemplified philanthropic leadership, volunteerism and success in Marin.

Mill Valley Lumber Yard owners Matt and Jan Mathews, who bought the historic property in 2012 and preserved the its iconic character by turning it into a community gathering space, are among the winners who will be honored at an event set for Friday, September 21 (11:30 am-1:30pm) at St. Vincent’s School for Boys in San Rafael, with former MLB pitcher and Emmy-award winning broadcaster, Mike Krukow serving as this year’s featured speaker.

All honorees were nominated by their respective Marin County Chambers of Commerce, and the Mill Valley Chamber's Board of Directors sought to celebrate the Mathews' vision for the future of a property built by lumber magnate Robert Dollar in 1892. Because it was zoned multi-family residential, few interested buyers could see a sustainable future for the property aside from turning it into high-end condos.

“I just couldn’t imagine those buildings being torn down,” Matt Mathews says of the impetus that galvanized the longtime local residents to dive into the project of a lifetime.

You make an interesting point that a lumber yard is an interesting venue for a holiday with our family. My parents are planning a family vacation but have no idea where to go too. I think I will suggest a lumber yard to them when I speak with them later.
