In unveiling a bold partnership with Hospice by the Bay this week, The Redwoods CEO Hunter Moore, who was hired in late 2017, has taken the biggest leap forward for Mill Valley's senior community since the vast, $32 million, multi-year Revitalization Project wrapped two years ago.

The two nonprofit organizations are teaming up to create a 12-room inpatient hospice center in one wing of the existing skilled nursing center on the The Redwoods' campus at 40 Camino Alto. Redwoods' officials say the center will be open to adult patients throughout the Bay Area who meet hospice eligibility requirements.

“This is a first for Marin County,” says Moore, who succeeded longtime Redwoods' CEO Barbara Solomon.

“We are looking forward to working together to fill a gap in Marin’s otherwise robust health care environment," adds Hospice by the Bay CEO Kitty Whitaker. "This center will provide a great option for those hospice patients who either do not want or, are unable to, remain at home. We believe this option can provide them the best possible alternative during their final days."

Founded in 1975 as Hospice of Marin, the organization Whitaker leads provides compassionate hospice care, pediatric & adult palliative care, & grief support for individuals and groups. An affiliate of UCSF Health, it's the second-oldest hospice in the nation and the first in California.

According to Hospice by the Bay, an estimated 350-400 people in Marin County are in hospice care at any one time. Moore says major renovations will take place over the next year to update existing rooms and common areas, as well as to create special outdoor spaces such as a serenity garden.

The Redwoods, a not-for-profit senior community founded in 1972 by the Community Church of Mill Valley, provides multi-level, affordable rental housing, services and care to 340 low- and moderate income seniors from across the SF Bay Area and beyond.

The 411: Hospice by the Bay and The Redwoods are partnering on a 12-room inpatient hospice center in one wing of the existing skilled nursing center on the The Redwoods' campus at 40 Camino Alto. MORE INFO.
