About the Artist

Nancie Bailey and her daughters.
Our cover features a photo by Nancie Bailey that captures the adventurous, joyful spirit of our community. Bailey, who lives downtown with her daughters and husband Todd Prakin, an SF firefighter, is a latecomer to photography, urged by friends who saw her work to pursue it more seriously. “It’s more of a hobby. We live in such a beautiful place,” she says. Her daughter Tessa, who simply exudes joy as she departs Slide Ranch summer camp, and Smoothie, the family’s name for their classic VW bus, anchor the image. chasingvolkswagens.com.

Editors' Note

We’ve been putting out these EMV Guides for six years now. They are what the moniker implies – a guide to the Mill Valley community, spotlighting all manner of events, people, places and things that make the 94941 such a creative place to live, learn and gather.
But this Guide, for the most obvious of reasons, is different.

First things first: To the doctors, nurses, frontline workers, first responders, caretakers, volunteers, unexpected-yet-engaged homeschoolers and so many more of you who have stepped up big time during the COVID-19 crisis, we say THANK YOU – ALL OF YOU.

As we write this, we are clawing our way out of a health crisis and the economic disaster it wrought. We are also, thankfully, having much-needed, hard conversations within our community about racial justice, and protesting systemic inequality.

Striking a balance between those cold, hard truths and our comparably small over-arching mission – to encourage residents and visitors to get out and experience the natural beauty, incredible dining, retail that rivals any in the Bay Area and world class arts and entertainment – is a tough needle to thread.

So let’s get into it: in the pages that follow, you’ll find windows into some of the most joyful characters in town, a look at the soon-to-be renovated Depot building and its invaluable role in our community, longstanding family-owned businesses, a photo essay on frontline workers and some only-in-Mill Valley experiences. You’ll also find four seasons of recipes, bits of wisdom from local luminaries, and handy community resources.
We love this community, and we hope you will be an active participant in it!
–Jim Welte and Susan Lopes
