Mill Valley is nestled against a mountain between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

Mill Valley edges Mount Tamalpais State Park, with hiking and mountain biking through redwood forests and hillsides strewn with wildflowers. It has redwood groves and oak woodlands with a spectacular view from the 2,571-foot peak. On a clear day, visitors can see the Farallon Islands 25 miles out to sea, the Marin County hills, San Francisco and the bay, hills and cities of the East Bay, and Mount Diablo. More than 50 miles of trail are within the park and connect to a larger, 200-mile-long trail system within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

The Marin Headlands encompasses more than 75,000 acres,with legendary hiking and mountain biking trails throughout. Tennessee Valley trail starts in Tamalpais Valley and is an easy hike that ends at the Pacific Ocean. Muir Woods National Monument attracts visitors from around the world. The tallest redwood at Muir Woods is 258-feet tall and the average age of the redwoods is between 500 and 800 years old, with the oldest being 1,200 years old. Muir Woods contains six miles of trails. All of these walks afford views of thousands of old-growth coast redwoods, the tallest living things in the world. Mill Valley has 175 heritage steps, lanes and paths that have been documented in a map that is available at the Mill Valley Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center, Mill Valley City Hall, the Mill Valley Community Center and the Mill Valley Library.These marked walkways originate all over town, and most are easy to access from the downtown area. The steps, lanes and paths provide great exercise and a glimpse into the beautiful residential areas of Mill Valley, and many are important evacuation routes in case of emergency.

Run the trails of the world-famous Dipsea Race.

The most famous steps in Mill Valley are the Dipsea Steps – 168 steps leading up to the the trails of Mt. Tamalpais – and the grueling start to the world-famous Dipsea Race, the oldest trail race in America.

The mountain bike was invented in Marin County, and Mill Valley and the surrounding area are a big draw for mountain bikers as well as road bikers from around the Bay. There are 46 road and mountain biking trails in and near Mill Valley, from Tiburon and Sausalito to the highlands and the Bolinas lagoon. You can find the classic Mt. Mill Valley’s public golf course has hills, redwoods and creeks.

Mill Valley is home to a challenging 9-hole municipal golf course that is one of the hidden jewels of the Bay Area, and it is just blocks from downtown. Open seven days a week, the walking course meanders through 42 acres up and down hills, through redwoods and over creeks. It’s family-friendly, with a full snack bar, and equipment and lessons are available through the pro shop. Call and reserve your tee time one week in advance or just drop in and play.

Bayfront Park
Situated along both sides the inlet to Richardson’s Bay, Bayfront Park is home to soccer fields, passive recreation areas, wildflower gardens and the Mill Valley Dog Park. The Mill Valley-Sausalito multi-use path intersects the park and is popular with walkers and bikers.

Boyle Park
Bounded by East Blithedale and East Drive, Boyle Park features two Little League baseball diamonds, five tennis courts, a children’s playground, grassy field and a group barbecue picnic area. Public restrooms are near the children’s playground.

Hauke Park
Adjacent to Bayfront Park, at Rogue Morales and Hamilton Drives, Hauke Park has a children’s playground, softball diamond, and playing fields. Public restrooms are near the Public Safety Building.

Friends Field
Located at the Mill Valley Community Center, Friends Field is a large grassy playing field used for youth sports and other community activities. Public restrooms are at the Community Center building.

Old Mill Park
A shaded redwood park with a  creek close to downtown Mill Valley at Throckmorton Avenue and Old Mill Street. Home to the historic “Old Mill” and adjacent to the Mill Valley Library. Public restrooms are near the children’s playground.

Mill Valley Skate Park
Located at the Mill Valley Middle School, and adjacent to the Sycamore Avenue entrance to Bayfront Park, this is a small, steel skate park. Bikes are not permitted and safety gear is required.

THREE GREAT HIKES

One of the Bay Area’s most accessible and gorgeous hikes is an easy and scenic hike from downtown Mill Valley to Cascade Falls Park.

7.3 mile Mount Tam loop from Stinson Beach to Pantoll and back, through gorgeous woods, high grassy slopes, and a lush steep ravine.

This 5.8-mile loop starts from Muir Beach, at the well marked trailhead near the swimming beach. As you leave the parking lot, cross the bridge and head left. Once you come to the California Coastal Trail, go right and head up the trail.
